NYAIP Announces License, Policy Change Rule Changes

DEWITT, N.Y., August 2 – New rule changes regarding foreign drivers licenses and adding commercial autos to existing private passenger policies have been announced by the New York Automobile Insurance Plan (NYAIP), according to IIABNY.

In its IIABNY Insider newsletter, the association explained, regarding the foreign drivers licenses changes, The [NYAIP] plan has amended manual rules stating that an international driver permit is not a valid drivers license, clarifying the application submission requirements when a foreign drivers license is submitted, correcting editorial references to foreign drivers licenses, and clarifying that an inexperienced operator is an insured licensed for a total of less than three years, excluding periods of revocations or suspensions. The changes take effect October 1, IIABNY noted.

Additionally, IIABNY reported another new rule which establishes a procedure for handling requests to replace a private passenger vehicle with a commercial vehicle on an existing policy, or adding a commercial vehicle to an existing private passenger policy. According to text of the NYAIP notice, the rule also specifies that policy change requests shall not be submitted on private passenger policies when the additional or replacement vehicle is a commercial vehicle, and introduces a provision for cancellation by an insurer when a commercial vehicle is endorsed to a private passenger policy. IIABNY reported that these change take effect September 1.
