During Januarys gubernatorial ceremonies, a 19-gun salute roared in Trenton for Governor Jon Corzine. Departing Governor Dick Codey leaned over to Corzine and whispered, Beware, one day theyll be shooting at you! And thats really the truth. It may be property tax increases, pay-to-play issues, or even car insurance woes. The man at the top gets the blame or credit. Although, sometimes the blame falls to a commissioner.

And speaking of commissioners, Donald Bryan was recently appointed Acting Banking and Insurance Commissioner. Throughout these many years, Bryan has held that same title off and on. Hes regarded as a hard worker and perhaps one of the most knowledgeable folks at the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (NJDOBI). So, for the time being, NJDOBI is in good hands.

In the meantime, a national search for a permanent insurance commissioner is being conducted. I have always said that I would search far and wide for individuals with exceptional ability and integrity to serve the people of New Jersey, said Corzine in a prepared statement. Hopefully, our Garden State will receive the best and brightest individual available. That would be great.

NJDOBI and insurance companies will also have to deal with a new public advocate. The position of public advocate was revived last year, having been eliminated in 1994. Yes, its back! Our new Office of Public Advocate will represent the elderly, mentally ill and disabled, and insurance ratepayers. And once the nominee, Ronald Chen, is confirmed by the New Jersey Senate, expect some insurance rate increases to be questioned and challenged.
