Issue: 2007-08-07 Guilty Plea in N.J. for Producing Phony Insurance Cards♦ New Jersey TRENTON, N.J., August 7 – A husband and wife were sentenced to state prison for three years and three and a half years respectively after they pleaded guilty to charges of producing and selling phony car insurance cards. The sentences were imposed by Superior Court Judge Darlene J. Pereksta against Charlotte T. Murphy and her husband, Dan L. Murphy, both of Trenton. According to Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden Brown, the defendants pleaded guilty to charges that they produced a phony Liberty Mutual Auto insurance card and a phony State Farm Insurance Card. Brown said that Charlotte Murphy also attempted to register a car at the Motor Vehicle Commission with a phony Prudential Insurance Card. Phony insurance cards sell on the street for $50 to $200 apiece to persons who do not buy the car insurance required by law. |
